POP 66: POP CAN PINHOLE PHOTOS OF ROUTE 66 – by Wes Pope

Since 1998 I have been photographing people and places along historic Route 66 using cameras made out of soda cans. The goal is to make images that look distorted and old while documenting modern life on the Mother Road. Along the way I met Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Jesse Jackson, Jr. and the women of Exotic World, among many others.

This project has been feature on NPR’s The Picture Show and has been exhibited at the Photographic Center Northwest and at Corrosive Gallery in the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago. I hope to publish it as a book someday soon.

Winner of a 2010 regional Emmy award for best topical documentary. Final Edition captures the final days of the Rocky Mountain News. Produced and edited by Matthew Roberts. Co-produced by Sonya Doctorian and Joe Mahoney. I contributed video and time-lapse footage to the project.

LIFTING THE GUINEA WORM CURSE – photography, video & editing by Wes Pope / Chicago Tribune

Thanks to Dr. Donald Hopkins and The Carter Center the ancient Guinea worm disease will soon be eradicated. I shot all photos and video for this project and produced it while I was a staff photographer at the Chicago Tribune. It accompanied a story by Colleen Mastony. Geng Wang designed the Flash interface.

I managed to give my self a dose of altitude sickness working a long day above 12,000 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park in an attempt to tell Jim Davidson’s story. This video accompanied a report by Kevin Vaughan that appeared in the Rocky Mountain News. I shot all the video and edited the piece.

MAN VS. NATURE IN THE NORTHWEST – pinhole photography by Wes Pope

I have been photographing the impact humans have had on the landscape in the Northwest using cameras made out of cardboard boxes and latte cups. The long exposure times give the impression of nature’s time scale: humans often appear as a blur.
